The scores on the SAT and ACT allow colleges and universities to narrow down the number of applicants so that they can make decisions on acceptance. This fact makes your individual SAT/ACT score extremely important. The schools that are receiving thousands of applications do not have time to read every document, transcript and essay. In general, the ACT/SAT tests attempt to measure college readiness and predict future academic success. But they do so in very different ways:

  • The ACT test measures what a student already knows. It covers material that the student should have learned in high school.
  • The SAT test is used more as a predictor of what a student is capable of learning. It deals with material that the student may not have learned in high school

Of course, a college coach that is recruiting you wants you to be a good athlete, but they NEED you to be a good student as well. If you don’t have the strongest GPA you might be able to still find your way into a university if you have a good ACT/SAT test score.

The coach cares about your test scores because that will determine how much scholarship money and financial aid you can receive. If your test scores are sub-par then they will have to spend more money to get you enrolled. So, if your test scores aren’t where they need to be there are options such as tutoring just for the SAT/ACT tests. Like sports, academics is a competition and it takes a lot of hard work to achieve your goals. Hard work isn’t lost on coach and administrator. They know how hard it is to be a high school athlete and a student and will take that into account when deciding on who to offer scholarships and financial assistance to for attending their school.

Sometimes just 1 point on a test will make all the difference. If you don’t make a good score the first time, don’t worry about it, you can take the SAT and ACT as many times as you want.

Don’t wait to take action – procrastination only causes delays and regret. Take your tests as early as possible to gauge where you’re at and if you need to improve your test scores to help make you both eligible and more desirable by a school that you’ll create a lifetime of friendships, memories and your athletic and professional future.
