Why Sleep is Good for Athletes

Besides physical conditioning and eating the right foods, sleep is one of the most important things an athlete needs to be conscious about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the quality and amount of sleep athletes get is often the key to winning. Sleep is where your body repairs itself and your brain for all of the activity you will do the next day. Getting at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep can improve your performance and concentration. This is why so many popular athletes make a point to go to bed early.

When you are working hard during the day training and exercising, your body is using up all your energy and in order to restore that energy you must get good sleep. Your memory, performance and mood are all affected when you don’t get the right amount of sleep. If you want to succeed and become a star athlete sleep is the first step on the road to becoming a great athlete.

We know that as athletes it can be hard to get the right amount of sleep for many reasons. There are a few tips to help get you on the right track to more sleep:

  1. Reduce the amount caffeine you take in during the day. This could affect the quality of sleep you get.
  2. Put yourself on a schedule. By adhering to a regular schedule you will help your body know when to relax itself and get ready for bed.
  3. Take daily naps if you aren’t able to get enough sleep at night.
  4. If you have a competition ahead, make it a point to increase your sleep a few weeks in advance.

By taking the time to make sure you are getting enough sleep you are looking out for your body and working at becoming a successful athlete. So many times sleep is over looked but you should never over look the thing that has the greatest impact on your performance as an athlete.
